One of the most valuable lessons I've learned about writing has been "Show, don't tell." This can be kind of hard to explain sometimes and can devolve into a discussion of semantics, but while looking for a quote today, I found this and think it conveys the idea perfectly:
Don't say the old lady screamed. Bring her on and let her scream. --Mark Twain
