Question

Does anyone else use phosphate-free dishwasher detergent? Do you have problems with it?

I recently bought Palmolive eco+ gel liquid detergent. I did this for two reasons. 1) My regular Cascade was not available, and 2) I was feeling particularly earth-friendly that day and the Palmolive seemed like the best deal for my dollar. My problem is that ever since I started using the Palmolive eco+, my dishes are not nearly as clean. Not only are there food particles still stuck on the dishes much of the time, but they ALL have a very visible residue on them every single time I use the stuff. I've tried using more. I've tried using less. I would think it's a problem with my dishwasher except it started the same day I started using the Palmolive. Is any of this a symptom of the phosphate-free? Or is Palmolive eco+ just sucky?

I've considered Seventh Generation detergent, which I'm pretty sure is available at my local Target (alas, not at Wal-Mart), but if the issue is with the lack of phosphates, then, sorry, the earth will have to suck it.

Have any of you had any experience with this?

Whenever I have issues it's time to put more rinse-aid in the dishwasher. You know Jet Dry or Cascade (rinse) or something like it. Granted my first thought is Palmolive isn't the highest quality brand detergent either, so it may be just finding the "green" alternative in a higher quality product, and I have no experience. Cascade works for me. The box is green, does that count?

Okay. So this has nothing to do with this blog, but if you could email me that recipe you posted on Ree's blog, I would love it, because My cousin Ian is allergic to eggs, and milk (also flour, but i can substitute the flour with rice flour).

Also, I was wondering if you could clear one thing up for me: In the three holes do I pour a separate mixture in each (measured separately) or mix those three things together first, and then just divide them up between the three holes??

Thanks,

Hi Amy,

Thought you might be interested to read my review of Palmolive eco+ gel. I didn't have quite the negative experience that you did, but I also provided information on a couple of other eco dishwashing options.

Here's the link if you're interested - http://1greenproduct.com/2008/07/kitchen-palmolive-eco-gel-dishwasher.html
