I Wish I May, I Wish I Might...

There are several things that make me look forward to the time when my children are grown up. One of them is the prospect of private, undisturbed bathroom time. Bathroom time when I don't have to worry about what someone may be getting into; bathroom time where I don't have to answer 57 questions about the state of the universe and what's for dinner; bathroom time that doesn't involve visitors.

Case in point: this afternoon I went into my room and SHUT THE DOOR, of all things, to use my bathroom. Noah found this absolutely unacceptable. He cried. He screamed. He said to me, in so many words, "Nobody cares about me, and I have been abandoned and left to wither and die out here in the hallway, and on top of that my psyche is now going to be seriously maladjusted, requiring years of very intensive, very expensive counseling, which you will have to pay for because I will be so psychologically damaged that I will be unable to hold down a job." Then he discovered that the baby gate was down and he could get into my room through the kitchen, and he ran joyously into the bathroom, jumping and dancing, announcing that all was forgiven, all the while laughing a little manaically. Then, like, three other people came into my room, and all hopes for some privacy were shattered.

Seriously, people. Private bathroom time. If you have it, look on it with new-found appreciation.

Ok, so I actually can kind of relate. When I was living in the studio with two other girls, the bathroom was the only room where we could a shut a door. So, we had this rule that unless it was an absolute emergency no one could say anything about how long we were in there. If we took a shower others couldn't come in at all. It was the only private time we had. So I understand the need for privacy. Luckily, my roommates are adults and don't cry and beg for entrance (well, most of the time).

i learned this lesson as a babysitter. i'm not sure i could handle it full time. i mean really, what is motherhood bliss to private potty time? ;)
